John Foster was promoted to the position of Director of Reactor Operations at the MIT Nuclear Reactor Lab (NRL) on January 1st, 2019. John joined the NRL in 1992 and over the course of his career he has held the positions of Senior Reactor Operator, Shift Supervisor, Silicon Doping Program Manager, Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent, and Deputy Director of Reactor Operations.

Since the beginning of his career, John has worked with other reactor staff members on a wide variety of special projects. This has provided him a wealth of detailed knowledge of the MIT Reactor facility that most employees do not experience first-hand. Through these projects he has built strong relationships with his colleagues, who he feels are a great group of people.

John has been a member of the NRL for over 26 years thanks to the environment at both MIT and the NRL. “It’s challenging, there’s something new every day,” says John, “and the flexibility MIT provides is huge for me and my family.” While serving as Deputy Director of Reactor Operations, he increased the NTD Silicon production and managed the development of the instrumentation for the NRL’s new nuclear safety system.

We welcome John and his experience to his new role and look forward to the growth he will continue to provide the NRL.
