The MIT NRL will again be part of the Cambridge Science Festival

Ever wanted to stand in the control room of a nuclear reactor? Curious as to how MIT's reactor operates? Come visit MIT's Nuclear Research Reactor Lab and learn more about nuclear science and engineering, radiation facts and safety, the types of research conducted at the lab, and view the facility from the inside! Bring your questions and take advantage of this unique opportunity! Limited to 30 participants.

The target audience is families, teens, and adults; the tours are free. Tours will be given on April 21, 2016 at 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM and will last about 1-1/2 hours.

Our tours for the 2016 Cambridge Science Festival are at capacity! We hope to see you at next year's festival if you were unable to make it onto a tour this time around!

Appointment of a new Director of Reactor Operations

The MIT NRL is very pleased to announce the appointment of Al Queirolo as the new Director of Reactor Operations. Al arrived at the NRL on January 4, 2016, and will assume full DRO responsibility following completion of various training requirements in a few months. The NRL is very fortunate to have the opportunity to bring on a new DRO with an extraordinary level of operational and managerial experience. Al comes to us from Brookhaven National Laboratory where he served as manager of operations of the Brookhaven High Flux Beam Reactor (HFBR), and later as manager of the Reactor Division. A critically important goal for the MIT NRL is to be able to significantly improve reactor operational reliability, which can then greatly improve our research performance. During Al's tenure as head of the operations of the 60-MW HFBR, the facility had a virtually perfect record of operational reliability. We have great confidence that Al can work within our excellent operations organization bringing together inside knowledge and his outside experience to make a major leap forward in the NRL’s operational performance.

MIT NRL Receives Environmental Health and Safety Award

On December 8, 2015, the Nuclear Reactor Laboratory received MIT Environmental Health and Safety’s 2015 Excellence Award. This recognition is awarded annually to an MIT lab, center or department with the highest achievement in the implementation and completion of EHS safety initiatives and training, including laboratory self-inspections and follow-through.
