Prior to joining the NRL in 2016, Al was a member of the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) staff for 36 years, during which time he served in many different positions with extensive responsibilities managing projects of all sizes and complexities as well as managing a nuclear research reactor organization with over 120 staff members. As the Reactor Division Manager he was responsible for the overall safe and effective operations of the BNL Nuclear Research Reactors, the Brookhaven Medical Research Reactor (BMRR), and the High Flux Beam Reactor (HFBR). During his tenure the HFBR was recognized for its exceptional record of operational reliability.
He also served as the USSP Liaison Officer at The United States Mission to International Organizations in Vienna (UNVIE). There, he served as the liaison between the U.S. Support Program to IAEA Safeguards (USSP) and the IAEA’s Department of Safeguards. As the Liaison Officer, he worked closely with other members of UNVIE’s IAEA section to ensure good cooperation with U.S. stakeholders and compatibility of USSP objectives with U.S. policies.
